History

Toponym “CASTRUM THEOBALDI” appears in 1201, at the time of the foundation of the abbey of Villeneuve, currently located on the commune of the Sorinières, by the Constance duchess of Brittany. The temporal one of this abbey, girl of that of Buzay, not far from Rouans, on the edges of the Loire, will be equipped with grounds, revenues and agrarian places of production which will ensure its subsidies. It will receive, against a wine patella, the roadway of Castle-Thébaud and the mill facing him. The locality Castle-Thébaud is thus former to 1201.

Several assumptions could explain this name:

  • a lord Thébaud whose only the patronym would remain, would have lived in this place at one moved back period, perhaps mérovingienne, but no writing comes to confirm this thesis.

  • Another explanation is based on the geographical location of the village: a river boxed between two small valleys (the career of Caffineau exists only since the beginning of the 20th century) with a tower in overhang, from where Castrum and Théobaldi which means close to God.

The site of the tower is indicated on the Napoleonean land register of 1830, the town hall is with the site of the locality “benefit of the tower”. The latter, according to any probability, was only one simple quite useful tower of guet to control the traffic on the Maine. The absence of vestiges of fortification on the accesses of cliff does not exclude therefore the presence from a palisade out of wooden or of a called defensive hedge plessis such as one could imagine it at the time of the feudal mounds, with the whole beginning of the Moyen-âge, in times when simple posterior Castrum at the time Gallo-Roman E preceded already the strong castle of the year 1000. Another locality, placed that one in the center of the current borough, comes to confirm this reflection: it is about the Surface of the Room being next to the street of the Pot-Gray. This toponym indicates a construction mérovingienne strengthened, built with the site of a site Gallo-Roman.

But the discovery of polished axes of the Neolithic , in the mists of time plunges us while making us make a 4000 year old good in the past. These weapons were very discovered close to the site of Saint-Gabriel. This place is also one of the two points the tops of the commune. This dominant position had been chosen by our prehistoric ancestor like place of defense and protection against a hostile nature. The forest of Touffou extended then on the major part of the south of our department, one can draw his contour of it while following the many toponyms “bauche” which one has in our area and which means places cleared in forest, to create there a habitat favourable with the food crop.

The choice of a name of archangel to indicate a place, the such Saint-Gabriel hillock, is also the indication of a prehistoric habitat which will remain with the wire of time. At the 19th century an archeologist, Charles Marionneau, will discover there a villa Gallo-Roman E of great importance, This site conceals still nowadays, of the fragments of tiles with edges. The archeologist had put at the day in the field of Maseries (another place name indicating the presence of a habitat Gallo-Roman of the S after J. - C.) a hypocauste and small a oppidum, perhaps dedicated to the Mercure god, as well as the fragments of a mosaic still visible at the 19th century.

In addition to the Surface of the Room, a third site Gallo-Roman was indexed on our commune, it is close to Small Douet.

The Middle Ages will leave many vestiges on the commune, Templerie is one of most remarkable with all the historical past of this kind of monks knights. It depended on the commandery of Clisson and extended its influence since the forest of Touffou while passing by the Wild Bar to the village of the Roadway close to Aigrefeuille.

In the borough, street of the Abbot-Ménardeau, the walker can admire a tower of the 15th century which is next to the cure.

The castle of Bourdinière is also a high medieval place whose importance was recognized; its lords had right of edge, bench and enfeu, i.e. to affix their armorial bearings on the wall of the church, to sit there and be buried there. They were combined with the seigniory of Templerie.

The Saint-Thomas priory belonged to the abbey of Saint-Jouin of Marnes, close to Thouars and extended its temporal since the parish of Castle-Thébaud until Bridge-Saint-Martin. It perceived the dîme on all the fruit-bearing cultures.

At the beginning of the 18th century the ship-owner Guillaume Grou, owner of the private mansion the Temple of the Taste on the Feydeau island with Nantes, will acquire the old manor of Placelière to make of it the “Nantes madness” which one knows. One even says that Benjamin Franklin was accepted there at the time of its passage in the Nantes area. The past slave trader of our area will durably mark its print our commune, thus François Valéry who made plant these exotic gasolines coming from the Mauritius which still draw up their majestic port in the park of Rafflay.

The day before the French revolution, a conflict will oppose the parishioners of Castle-Thébaud: the choice of the church. That of the parish, Saint Martin's day, is located at the center of the cemetery but this last is very excentré compared to the borough, it is along the way which leads to Saint-Hackney carriage by the port Bahuaud (old village close to Beautiful Access). The outdatedness of the church as that of the cure which is leant to him, leads the vice-chancellor to require the rise in the Saint-Vincent vault located of the center of the borough close to the place known as of the Tower, in parish church.

Two theses then will clash supported for the first by the “friends of Saint Martin's day” supported by the lords of Bourdinière and Templerie because of their privileges in this church, for the second by the “friends of Saint-Vincent” supported by the general of parish (the equivalent of the municipal council nowadays) itself poked by the lord the Wolf of Chasseloire heir to the rights of the former lords of Castle-Thébaud, but not of their grounds and which is consequently considered to be cofounder of the churches in Castle-Thébaud.

At the conclusion of the lawsuit during which the parishioners will withdraw the baptismal font of a church to give them in the other and conversely, the general of parish will be débouté by the court of Rennes to the profit of the “friends of Saint Martin's day” and of the 32 owners. But the state of decay of the Saint Martin's day church at the end of the pleasing Revolution to choose Saint-Vincent, the History will have given him reason. Saint Martin's day will be destroyed, the stones of the cure will be used for construction of the house Pihan Dufeillay in the borough, one can still admire his daring architecture, on several levels with hillside which dominates the Maine.

At the beginning of the Revolution, the memory of this conflict is very close and part of the “friends of Saint Martin's day” will support the White while an other of Saint-Vincent will be combined with the Blue ones.

The Revolution and its procession of disasters notably will affect the commune. One raises the trace of execution in the registers of the civil statue. To the human disaster the degradations made on the architectural heritage are also added, several noble houses suffered from these exactions, Bourdinière will be destroyed partly: a tower will disappear, Templerie will be burned, the blazon with the pediment of the gate of entry of this house still carries the traces of the blows of hammer charged to make it disappear, Blancheterie and Placelière will be also burnt.

The Agaisse abbot, serving commune, will take refuge in a deep hiding-place in Chauvinière, but there will remain active and use of all its talent of negotiator to obtain several handing-over of weapons at the conclusion of talks in the “Tourlourou” with the Général Shakes. At the end of this tormented period, the abbot will activate himself for the rebuilding of the place of worship; it is him which will buy with the Napoleonean army, confined Viarme place with Nantes, of return of the war of Spain, two bells which will be installed in the new bell-tower of the Saint-Vincent church. Named cleaned parish in 1803, it will die out in its home of the Saint-Thomas on January 8th 1850.

Under the Directoire a cantonal municipality gathers Aigrefeuille, Bignon, Castle-Thébaud. Patriots castelthébaldais follow one another at his head: Lesage, Village, Lizé, Ménardeau.

Castle-Thébaud will shelter a gendarmerie in 1836 and will dispute, in vain, the chief town of canton with Aigrefeuille located better on the geographical level.

During the Great War the common pay a heavy tribute, the tables mémoriales count 56 dead including 13 missings.

The commune will be occupied at the time of the Second world war, the house Pihan Dufeillay will become the seat of “Kommandantur”.

At the end of the 20th century, Castle-Thébaud made important demographic great strides. Its population is in 2000 of more than 2500 inhabitants.

The commune is located in the middle of the vineyard of the muscadet wine of Separates and Maine. It kept of this fact today its rural character, of the green landscapes, the slopes which take with the length of the seasons the colors of the vine. The river of the Maine which borders the commune lends to the nautical activities and its banks to the climbing and the hiking.

The vine growers of Castle-Thébaud gained 5 times since its creation the “bottle of gold”, rewarding the commune for the local vineyard having had in the year the greatest number of prices to the contests of the wines of Nantes and Paris. The commune is leader in this field, thanks to the quality of its soils and with the competence of its vine growers.
