Geography

History

The commune and the natural area which surrounds it, the Saulnois , owe their name with the exploitation of the salt which was formerly practiced there.

The city is relatively recent. The territory on which the castle will rise, and later the city, belonged to the fields of évêché of Metz. The sector was also a stronghold of Lorraine, thus in 1277, the duke Ferry III of Lorraine associated the count Thiébaut II of Bar with half of the stronghold of Amelécourt and with the third of the saltworks of this quoted.

The legend says that they are pilgrims on the way for Saint-Nicolas-of-Port who discovered a salt spring. About 1340, the regent Elisabeth of widowed Austria of the duke Ferry IV makes build a castle, to protect the exploitation from this source. In order to be able to control the ducal masonry, the bishop Adhémar de Monteil as makes build a fortress, as it names Beaurepaire , at some distance from there.

In 1342 bursts a conflict between Adhémar and the duke Raoul of Lorraine. Peace is signed in 1344 pennies the aegis of the count of Luxembourg. It is agreed that the bishop would pay ten thousand books with the duke of Lorraine, which will preserve its fortress of Castle-Saline. The conflicts begin again with dead of Raoul in 1346. In 1347 the peace treaty concluded that the castle built by Elisabeth of Austria would be sold with évêché; while waiting for that the sum is joined together, the two masonries will be put in deposit at the profit of Marie of Blois, then regent of the duchy. When Adhémar manages to join together the sum, the duchess compromises to return the two masonries. That involves a third armed conflict which destroys the ducal castle completely. It is completed by a total renunciation of the claims of the duchy on Castle-Saline. However since 1348, Adhémar gives its agreement for the rebuilding of this castle to which it contributes by an allowance of six thousand guilders. The exploitation of Celt industry was abandoned in 1826.

A Tour of Cap was in service between 1798 and 1852. It was used as relay between Delme and Vic-on-Pail on the Paris-Strabourg line.

Of 1800 with 1871, Castle-Saline was a sub-prefecture of the department of the Meurthe. It had faience manufactures, glassmakings, tanneries, mills with plaster, and was an important production center of fabrics of hemp.

Annexed to the Bezirk Lothringen by the Treated of Frankfurt, it takes the German name of Salzburgen . It was integrated into the department of the the Moselle when it became again French after the First World War.
