Castelnau-le-Lez (occitan: Castèlnòu of the ) is a common French, located in the department of the Herault and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called Castelnauviens.
Geography
Castelnau-le-Lez is located at the North-East of Montpellier, in the south of France. The Lez constitutes its Western limit with Montpellier and the city is with four kilometers in north and as the crow flies of the Mediterranean. The communes bordering are: Rabbit burrow and Jacou in north, Crès in the east, Saint-Ells on a few tens of meters in south-east, and Montpellier in the south and the west.
Located on the Roman Way Domitienne, it was then at the entry montpelliéraine is Trunk road 113 (Bordeaux - Marseilles since 1952). With the demographic development of the agglomeration of Montpellier and motor vehicle traffic, the commune sees building on its territory some of the roads of by-pass Montpellier in the north of its principal residential area, then on its limit with Crès. In December 2006, line 2 of the Tramway of Montpellier serves the city on the trunk road 113, arranged in urban boulevard.
With the wire of its history since its occupation by the Romans, his name was Sextant, Sextantio, Substantion, Castelnau-the-Montpellier and Castelnau it Crès.
History
De Sextantio with Substantion
Towards 700 before Jesus-Christ, a first population is installed on the plate of Substantion dominating the Lez. The Romans make the city of Sextantio of it, the “sixth relay station since the the Pyrenees on the via Domitia”.With time, its name becomes Substantion and the city accommodates during three centuries the bishops of Maguelone. A castle dominates left bank of Lez then; Castellum Novum.
During the 12th century, the city loses of its influence while becoming a possession of the lords of Montpellier. In 1674, Castelnau changes hand: the family of Castries becomes owner of the seigniory which also includes/understands Crès and Salaison. In 1791 Castelnau counted 68 inhabitants.
During the Old Mode, it formed only one parish with Crès under the successive names of Castelnau-the-Montpellier and Castelnau it Crès.
The commune since 1791
It is in 1872, during their separation that the communes of the Crès and Castelnau are born. With the demographic development of their insolated village in the east of the communal territory, the inhabitants of Crès asked for their erection in commune into 1846,1849 and the municipal council of Castelnau finally accepted in 1871. Places and monuments
The way domitienne ( Via Domitia ) passes by Castelnau-le-Lez, in the north of the district of Devois. Part of this section is registered like momument historical since February 5th, 1987. The commune manages five nursery schools (among lequels Jean of the Fountain, Rose de France and the Oaks) and three elementary schools (Mario Roustan, Jean Moulin and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry). It accommodates a college (Frederic Bazille) and two colleges (general-purpose Lycée Georges Pompidou and agricultural vocational school Honore de Balzac).
