With the XIIIe century, the habitat grouped around the Château in edge of the Rivière took the name of Castelmoron (Castle of the Marshes). It was the time of the Bastides. At the beginning of the War One hundred Year old, in 1345, the city was taken thanks to a pretense by the English troops of the Count of Derby. This last gave it to the Chevalier of Caumont which was on the spot. The Seigneurie remained in this family until the middle of the 17th century. In 1435, it was taken again by the French and its fortifications were dismantled.
At the 16th century, Castelmoron became one of the hearths Calvinistes of the Agenais. Its reformed church was founded in 1559. Saved during the wars of religion thanks to an agreement made between Catholic S and Protesting S in 1609, it saw however its Temple, initially prohibited, delivered to the demolition in 1693.
The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (October 18th 1685) caused the Exode of a certain number of Protestants. Castelmoronais, Mathieu Maury joined the America. Its descendants were distinguished in the foundation from the the United States, in particular his/her son James, director of a school which counted among its pupils Thomas Jefferson, future president of the the United States.
In 1668, the seigniory of Castelmoron passed from Caumont to Belsunce. It is in this family that was born that which was going to become bishop of Marseilles Monseigneur de Belsunce-Castelmoron which made act of devotion during the Peste of 1720.
The 18th century, tested by both large Flood S of 1728 and 1783 which destroyed the Mill of Lacoste partly (going back to 1290) and the Moulin Last nines (beginning XVIIIe) however marked the apogee of the River navigation on the Batch. Many the Barge S, since the Port of Castelmoron, transported Vin S and Farine S (minots) towards Bordeaux bound for the countries of the north of the Europe and the French West Indies. A trade flow is established with Saint-Domingue and the Louisiana caused by the Masters of the Bateau X Castelmoronnais. Some besides settled in the " Isles" the Antilles. But, as of the end of the 18th century, the loss of our colonies of America closed this commercial horizon definitively.
The town of Castelmoron crossed without damage the period Révolution naire. However, Castelmoronnais, Jacques Bujac were guillotine in Bordeaux, on December 21st 1793 for its dealings with the party Girondin. To the beginning of the First Empire, another Castelmoronnais went famous for its courage and its audacity. April 12th, 1805, Pierre Alexandre Marauld Dupon, Ordering the boat corsair " The représaille" beat and put in escape in front of Santander, a quite higher Goélette English in force. It deserved the nickname of " Agenais" corsair;.
The economic expansion started under the Monarchie of July caused in second half of the XIXe century, of deep transformations which gave to Castelmoron, a new aspect in rupture with its old moyenâgeuse configuration.
In 1845, to make it possible the secondary road 13 to cross Castelmoron, a Suspended bridge was built on the Batch; it led to the site of old woman church of the XIIIe century which was demolished.
The new church (the current one) will be built on the site of old the Cimetière in 1852. In 1859, the Temple protesting will rise at the exit of the city. During this same time, the old man " château" was entirely transformed by its new owner Felix Solar, native of Castelmoron, wire of a family of Portuguese Jewish origin.
Its new Architecture, including/understanding many timber structures (gallery and balconies) took its inspiration in the Alhambra de Grenade and the Mosquée of Cordoue, imitating in that the Moorish casino of Arcachon. The Solar Castle will be bought by the municipality in 1902 and will become the Town hall. It is with the generosity of Felix Solar that one owes the fountain with water jets built in 1859 on the place, close to the Halle.
The impulse given by the IIIe République to the Municipalities was to generate new achievements. In 1873 were created the Place of Foirail, decorated Platane S, the Place of Airyal (old Protestant cemetery), and on the place of the old tank for the ditch of the city (ditch which was then decked) current Place Bransoulié (of the name of the mayor which made the decision of work then). In 1874, a metal market was built to replace the old market out of wooden.
Lastly, in 1875, on the site of old the vat, one built a hold of trade with an imposing stone quay. Unfortunately, the river traffic was on its decline in spite of the enormous work completed on the Batch (fitted new, improvement of the lock S and the tow paths). The competition of the Railroad and the development of the Highway network will give a blow of thanks to commercial navigation on the river which will disappear definitively in 1923.
