Castellfollit of Roca

Castellfollit of Roca is a Catalan commune of comarque of the Garrotxa. It is in the Natural park of the volcanic Zone of Garrotxa. It is one of the smallest municipalities of Spain, with less Square kilometer.

History

There are two versions on the origin of the name Castellfollit of Roca:
  • first is based on the existence of a local Château. Thus, the village is quoted as of 1906 with the name of " Kastro Follit". In other documents, the names of " appear; Castro-Follito" and of " Castello-Follito". The reference to the word " follit" can find its origin in the type of rolled construction, namely, made with Ardoise S. As one does not find this kind of rock in the area, one thinks that the name is due to the similarity with the Basalte.
  • the second draws aside any idea of military construction for the word manor house, but is pressed on the silhouette of the paroie basaltic, similar to a Forteresse. The word " follit" , as for him, would come from the shape of the wall with the appearance of lengthened sheets.

The words " of Roca" are a recent addition to differentiate it from the two other Catalan villages bearing the same name: Castellfollit del Boix and Castellfollit de Riubregós.

Geography

The village is built on a basaltic cliff, named the will shingle of Castellfollit . This one made more than 50 m top and is spread out over approximately a Kilomètre length. This basaltic unit is the consequence of the erosive action , since several thousands of years, of the river Fluvià and the Toronell river on the volcanic remainders.

The escarpé rock results from the superposition of two cast of Lave: 217.000 years the first, old, comes from Batet of Serra (Olot). It consists of flagstones. The second, of approximately 192.000 years, is resulting from the Volcan S of Begudà (Sant Joan the Font). It is made up of prismatic forms.

The village was the occasion many paintings and catches of sights, because of the spectacular image offered by the profile of the church and the floating houses present on the headland.

Economy

There is in the commune a career of basalt. It is about only which is currently in activity in Spain. Its activity goes up in an unquestionable way at the year 1929, although certain documents refer there as of 1887.
