Castellane (in Occitan Of Provence: Castelana according to the traditional standard or Castelano according to the Norme mistralienne) is a Commune Frenchwoman, located in the department of the Alp-of-High-Provence and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.

With only a little more than 1500 inhabitants, Castellane with the characteristic to be smallest Sub-prefecture of France.

Its inhabitants is called Castellanais.

Geography

The commune of Castellane is a very old city established upstream large Canyon of the Verdon. The commune is located at 724 meters of altitude. August 1st

History

Antiquity

Castellane presents a settlement very old tonic to the tribes Ligures. It takes its rise with the Roman conquest, in particular thanks to the salt springs which one meets on his territory. The first name of the city east Salina or Salinae.

The inhabitants of the city are installed first of all on the edge of the Verdon to exploit the still visible salt springs there today.

The Middle Ages

To escape the invasions, they are installed with mountainside on the " terrasses" bordering the Rock. Certain vestiges of this old Castellane named Petra Castellana are still visible, in particular thanks to the Notre-Dame vault of the Rock which sits at the top of this immense stone mass. In 1189, Boniface III is attacked by its suzerain Alphonse Ier of Provence to which he refused the homage, and must be subjected. Another war bursts between the baron de Castellane and his count in 1227.

Rebirth

Paulon de Mauvans, Protestant captain, plunders the city in 1560, then settles there after an armistice with the governor of Provence, the count of Tende.

Castellanais commemorate each year the last weekend of January the resistance of the city to the invader huguenot come from Germany-in-Provence in 1588, through the ceremony of Pétardiers. One can then attend the reconstitution of the attack, during which the brave woman Judith Andre, killed the enemy captain, Motte, by pouring to him a cauldron of ebullient Poix top of the door of Annonciade, famous weak point of the village. This heroic act caused the fold of the attackers, since then celebrated.

Personalities related to the commune

Régis Messac (Champagnac, August 2nd 1893 - side of Large-Rosen or Gilded, C. 1945) was raises, of 1901 with 1903, at the school of Castellane, where his/her parents were teachers.

Gilbert Bourdin, very discussed founder and directing movement of the Mandarom (regarded as a Sect in a parliamentary report of 1995) had been established in Castellane of 1969 until its death in 1998.

In the commune also settled association Bouddhiste Ogyen Kunzang Chöling, animated by Robert Spatz, and quoted in the same parliamentary report also like a sect.
