Castelbou

Patronym

Castelbou is a family name carried by approximately five hundred people to France, located primarily on the southern half and more particularly around the departments of the Aveyron, the Herault and the Tarn.

Like all the Manor house-some thing, the name comes from the Latin castellum (castle or hamlet) to which is associated the suffix - bou which means in occitan good. It is thus the Château or the Hameau in good state, or where it makes good things in life in opposition to the strengthened castle whose comfort is Spartan.

Castelbon is another alternative of the patronym, less widespread (less than one hundreds of carriers in France). Indeed, in Languedocien Occitan , Castelbou correspond to the phonetic form and Castelbon with the written form. One finds in the registers of civil statue of the people who are sometimes called Castelbou , sometimes Castelbon .

Toponym

There exist four Castelbou hamlets and a castle of Castelbon, in the departments of the Aveyron, the Tarn and the Ariège, and the Catalan valley of Castellbò, in the south of Andorre is also a track of research. As for all the place names, it is very difficult to determine which hamlet or inhabitants took the name of the other, the 13th century having left only few documents on the families and the spot in question.
