Castanet-Tolosan (occitan: Castanet Tolosan ) is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Garonne and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.

Its inhabitants is called Castanéens.

Geography

The town of Castanet-Tolosan is on the Canal of the South in Haute-Garonne in the South-east of the Toulouse Agglomération . It is located at the doors of the Lauragais, on the road axis RN113 Toulouse - Carcassonne, to 12 km of the place of the Capitole of Toulouse.

The communes bordering are: Auzeville-Tolosane, Escalquens, Labège, Mervilla, Péchabou, Pompertuzat and Rebigue.

History

Castanet comes from the Latin castanea which means “sweet chestnut”. The Châtaignier S covered its slopes indeed formerly. The official addition of “Tolosan” by the municipal council goes back only to 1918, this in order to be distinguished from the other communes bearing the same name in the area.

Traces of very old constructions were located in what is the district of Pitcher today, all around the Cimetière. It is besides at this strategic place that the Romain S, at the beginning of our era, started to settle in order to control thus, and sees it Narbonnaise (the current RN 113), and sees it the Pyrenees (the current MINOR ROAD 79).

  • the Saint-Jacob hospital and its dependences: today restored, it shelters the MJC and the Club of the 3rd Old one.

  • a turn pentagonale' , which belonged to the convent of Cordeliers.
  • the Castle of Rabaudy, remains seigneuriale: its construction dates from the 13th century. Certain windows are of Renaissance style.
  • the “Besset house”, located on Avenue of Lauragais, is the oldest house of Castanet. She was recently rehabilitated to accommodate a Pharmacie and several residences.
  • the Channel of the South.

  • the Marché of Castanet is very old since it was created by letters patent of King Louis XIII, in 1641. Since, it is held each Tuesday in full downtown area.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Joseph Blessed Bard (1834-1919) Doctor of medicine of the Faculty of Paris. Father of the Hydrotherapy. Is at the origin of the thermal baths of Luchon.

  • Joseph Barthe (born in Castanet in 1830) honorary Professor of Philosophy. Author of many philosophical works. Officer of the State education. Author of a collection of Poetry S in Languedocien Dialect and in French language.
  • Danton Cazelles (1867-1961) Teacher with Castanet during nearly 30 years.
  • Poet Félibre Majoral, it had as a pen name Jean Pitchou. The majority of its Poème S were joined together in a collection entitled Ground of Oc . It published a historical and geographical study canton of Castanet-Tolosan, in 1929. It bequeathed to the commune a manuscript in 1945 the Book of Castanet .
  • Louis Delherm (1876-1953) Radiologist - Mayor of Auzeville. General adviser of the canton of Castanet. Commander of the Legion of honor.
  • Damaze Auba (1885-1964) Craftsman Wet cooper - Mayor of Castanet of 1945 with 1960. General adviser - Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
  • Joseph Gayssot (1874-1949) Farmer - Poet Félibre author of a hundred poems in Language of Oc.

  • Andre Lupiac (1873-1956) Artist painter. Cofounder in 1900 of the Company of the southernmost artists where it exposed each year starting from 1905. One can today find some of his fabrics in church S, the big room of the municipal council, and the Musées of Augustins and the Toulouse old man. One of its fabrics, Bysance , can be seen in the room of the municipal council of Castanet-Tolosan.
