Toponymy

The toponym Castétis appears in the forms Castetiis (1304, titles of Béarn), Casteg-Tiis (1344, notaries of Pardies), Castethiis (1369, titles of Béarn), Casteg-Thiis (1385, censier of Béarn), Castetys (1399, contracts of Gots), and Castetins (1675, reformation of Béarn).

The name comes from the Gascon casteg, borough, castle and hins (of Latin finished) and means borough, castle located at the limit.

History

Paul Raymond note which the commune counted a laic abbey, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.
The commune, member of the commandery of Malta of Caubin and Morlaàs, counted 68 fires in 1385.
Castétis was the chief town of a notairie made up of Arance, Argagnon, Artix, Audéjos (Arthez-with-Béarn), Balansun, Gouze, Lacq, Lendresse, Mont, Plassis (Balansun) and Greenhouse-Holy-Marie.
