Cassius (group)
Cassius is a Duo composed of Philippe Cerboneschi ( Zdar ) and Hubert White-Francard ( Low boom ). Under its various incarnations the duet took part in the explosion of the movement French Touch in second half of the Années 1990.
Biography
Hubert White-Francard is the son of the Parisian producer Dominique White-Francard, his Mathieu younger brother made himself famous under the pseudonym of Sinclair. Zdar was assistant with the studios +XXX (Plus30) when it met Hubert in 1988. They have both taken part in the first album of MC Solaar. Being all the two fans of Hip-Hop, they propose musics with the singer and are found to take part in the production and the composition of certain pieces under the name of Funk Mob . It is thanks to their participation in this disc, that James Lavelle of the label Mo' Wax the reference mark (he adored the album) and their request of instrumental the " Hip-Hop Bizaroïde".It is thus under the name of Funk Mob that the duet carried out the EP the extrasensory tribulations and Breaking Boundaries, Messing Up Heads , published by the British label Mo' Wax in 1994, before remixer of the pieces for inter alia Depeche Mode or Björk… Hubert White-Francard also worked on the albums Prose Fights and Paradisiaque of Solaar.
Being interested in the rates/rhythms House, Philippe Zdar carried out the album Pansoul in 1996 under the name of Motorbass, in company of Etienne de Crécy. After having converted Hubert “BoomBass” with the House (it was at the time rather refractory with all that could resemble of close with Techno) they compose their first piece House Foxy Lady under the patronym the Man Which Was worth Three Billion. The disc has good criticism on the other side of the channel, it will finish in the classification of the 50 individual ones of the year of the Mixmag magazine. The duet changes name for Cassius and signs a contract with Virgin. In 1998 they leave their first individual “Cassius 99” which is classified in Signal 10 in the United Kingdom. Some month later, in January 1999, they leave their first album 1999 . It is a mixture of House, of Hip-Hop and of Funk, the title of the disc is the same one as that of an album of Prince.
With more than 250.000 specimens sold in the world (including 50.000 in France), the album is a success, it will be even named with the Victoires of the music 2000.
Three years should be waited so that the second album is born, With the dream leaves in September 2002. The album brings together many guests (Jocelyn Brown, Ghostface Killah or M…), is produced in large studios American but it is a commercial failure. Hubert Boombass will say " with the Dream it is a little our Titanic… ". Despite everything their individual The Sound off Violence is classified at the head charts dance in the in December 2002 United States.
In 2006, Cassius leaves its new album, 15 again , which marks the turn pop-rock'n'roll of the group. Many guests are still with go (Etienne de Crécy, M or Pharrell Williams).
Philippe Zdar was named knight of the Ordre of Arts and the Letters in February 2005.
