Casquets

The Casquets () are composed of a group of rocks to 13 kilometers in the North-West of Aurigny, where several vessels made shipwreck. Two assumptions on the origin of the name: Cap or Cascade.

Among the most famous shipwrecks: those of the HMS '' Victory '', which struck the island S in 1744, and S '' Stella '' in 1899.

The rocks belong to a Récif of consistent sandstone of the islands of Burhou and Ortac. There N is hardly Végétation.

Headlight of Casquets

The first Phare was inaugurated the October 30th 1724. Its three turns were lit by fires with coal: St Peter, St Thomas and " Dungeon".

The headlights were built by Thomas Cocq, person in charge of the rocks, under license of Trinity House. One had to pay him a Halfpenny per ton for the boats which crossed the rocks and it received 50 delivers per annum S for the right to manage the Phare. In 1785, Trinity House returns in possession of the headlight.

In 1790, the headlights adopt the oil lamps. They are still improved in 1818 with the introduction of a lamp to ray of light, which flickers every 15 seconds.

During strong a Storm, the October 13rd 1823, the headlight is severely damaged. In 1854, the turns are raised of 10 meters, and one equips each one of lamps with 184000 Candela S which flicker 3 times every 30 seconds. In 1877, the north-western tower is once again raised, and one stops the lamps of both others turns.

During the Second world war, when the German S occupied the Channel Islands, a Commando Britannique S of the " Small Scale Raiding Forces " made two incursions. The first, Operation Dryad , took place between the 2 and on September 3rd 1942. It leads to the capture of 7 Germans, who were brought in England like prisoner of war.

In 1954, the headlight becomes electric, after the installation of a lamp of 2,83 million Candela S - this one is remarkable because it turns dextrorotatoirement.

Now, the lamp of the north-western tower makes 37 meters in height and flickers 5 times every 30 seconds. During one day shone upon, one sees the headlight with 24 marine miles. The Foghorn on the lathe east sounds every 6 seconds, and one hears it to approximately 5 km. On the western lathe, a rudimentary heliport was arranged.

In 1990, all the mechanism becomes automatic: one orders it starting from the " Trinity House Operations Center" Control; with Harwich.
