Casino of Monte Carlo

The casino of Monte Carlo is one of most prestigious and luxurious casino S of style Baroque of planet in full heart of Monte Carlo to Monaco on the Riviera. It belongs to the group Société of the sea bathings of Monaco and was founded and inaugurated in 1865 by François Blanc, called “the magician of Monte Carlo” and by the prince Charles III of Monaco (1818-1889).

Geography

The casino of Monte Carlo is located in full heart of Monte Carlo, close to the Hôtel of Paris on the Place of the Casino to 1km of the heliport of Monaco and 20 km of the Aéroport of Nice by the road of the seaside, by the highway A8 or at 7 minutes of flight by Hélicoptère.

History

In 1856, the prince Charles III of Monaco authorizes the opening of a casino in its Principauté of Monaco to create financial resources. After a first unfruitful installation in 1862 in the historical Monaco, a humble masonry is inaugurated in 1863 with Monte Carlo, hill then too deserted and isolated from Monaco to have least success.

Charles III then decides to entrust his project to the founder of casino the most talented of then, the French François Blanc called since “the magician of Monte Carlo” which founds the Société of the Sea bathings of Monaco (SBM) of which he becomes director and Concession naire associated with the prince de Monaco.

He makes then build any part the new district of Monte Carlo in hardly three years, which is then entirely deserted and wild. He founds the Hôtel of Paris in 1864, inaugurates the casino in July 1865, as well as the sumptuous Jardin of the Place of the Casino, water a jet, Palmier S, the prestigious coffee Café Couch in 1868… Charles III renames the hill in Monte Carlo with his name in his own honor (“Mount Italian Charles” in ). The completion of the railroad Nice - Vintimille in 1868 ensures the prosperity of this new place of holiday and Luxe.

Thanks to its talents and with its important capital, François Blanc succeeds in very little time where its predecessors ruined themselves: in few years, the luxurious vogue is acquired and the plate of Monte Carlo covers sumptuous buildings and villas.

The casino and the Real estate speculation of Monte Carlo quickly make the enormous fortune of the Blanc family and the family Grimaldi. Charles III, so decides to abolish officially very raised taxes with Monaco.

In 1878, Marie White, the widowed richissime of White François (deceased in 1877), request with the Architect Charles Garnier to build the Opera of Monte Carlo and the new Casino sumptuously decorated with luxurious Tapestry S, Painting S and of Gilding S Baroque S.

The casino is at the origin of the fortune of Monaco that Charles III and his successors (Albert Ier of Monaco, Louis II of Monaco, Rainier III of Monaco and Albert II de Monaco) will be able to multiply by ten partly by operations of Real estate speculation S, banking and financial. Its mirific annual Turnover represents today nothing any more but one negligible part of the incomes of the principality and the family Grimaldi.
