Carta Marina
The Carta Marina (in French Sea chart ) is a geographical map of XVIe century representing the seas, the coasts and the interior of the grounds of the country encircling the the Baltic. Are also represented: the north of the Scotland, the the Shetland, legendary the island of Thulé, the Faroe Islands and the Iceland. Its dimensions are: 1,70 m in length and 1.25 m in height. It was worked out by the last Archevêque of Sweden crowned with Rome: Olaus Magnus (1490-1557), which had to leave its country and to live in exile after Sweden became Protestant. The chart is the result of a long work which was spread out over one 12 years period. The first copy was printed with Venice in 1539.
