Carry city

A carries city belonged to the Fortification S of a city. It was until the modern Time the only means of crossing the ramparts surrounding the city. The turns and the doors had as a function to protect the heart from the city against enemy attacks.
The doors of city were often provided with a Pont-levis making it possible to cross a ditch encircling the city. harrows of wood or iron, and solids doors in oak provided an additional protection.
At the end of the 18th century, one started to set up doors of city without military function, but for example for the customs (the Octroi).
Today in Germany, much of doors of city became the emblem of these cities, and play a tourist part.
