History

Located in the average valley of the VAr, between sea and mountain, the town of Carros proposes today on a geographical space with human dimensions, the testimony of more than 2000 years of history through a whole of remarkable historic sites. The first historical traces that we have of a perennial human occupation of the current site of the commune go back approximately to the last centuries of the age of Iron, with a perched habitat, commonly called " pre-Roman " , the period of use extends from the Life in Ier century before JC. As many testimonys indicate it epigraphic, it would be a priori during Antiquity, and more particularly with Roman colonization, that the community will increase, to constitute in an unquestionable way at the latest as of second half of the 2nd century apr. J-C, a relatively important urban pole: Carros of its Latin name " VICUS LAVARATENSIS". The relations with the city of Vence, well-known in addition, of which it constitutes part of the territory, are numerous. But if the first bases of a chronology of the history carrossoise can be thrown as of this period, our area however does not escape the great documentary gaps which appear almost everywhere else for all the period known as of the " High Means-Age" (6th century 10th century), and in the actual position of research, it is only in the middle of the medieval time that we renew contact with our past. Indeed, according to the last archaeological investigations carried out on the communal territory, a relatively important Christian community seems to be attested as of the neighborhoods of the year thousand fitting thus in the first parochial network of the Alps Maritimes, well before the appearance of the parishes in each village. At the 12th century the presence of the castle which always dominates the village and the valley of the VAr is attested; it is called " castrum Carrosi ". It belongs to the seigniory of Blacas and the order of the knights of Malta. The modern time appears to us in a rather precise way, especially the S, as well through the documents of files as by the archaeological testimonys delivered at the time of the notable event or excavation campaigns, like the destruction including that of 1704 with the bag of the castle by the troops of the duke of Savoy and his release by those of Louis XIV the same year. Out of Right Bank of the VAr, the village of Carros, which belonged to the district of Fatty, was always territory of Provence, and contrary to much of other villages in the same frontier geographical position, it will never be integrated into the county of Nice. In 1860, Carros joined the new department of the Alps Maritimes and will know an Italian immigration during the remainder of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, related to the development of the market gardenings. As from 1968, an industrial park is arranged on Right Bank of the VAr and the Seventies will see being born on the commune a new city. Consequently, the commune of Carros, adding up today more than 10.000 inhabitants, will live on three centers: Carros village historical center around its castle, Carros agricultural and horticultural the heart Plans, Carros urban pole City.
