Carrington gilded

Dora of Houghton Carrington (March 29th 1893 - March 11th 1932) is a painter and British artist decorator .

Biography

Born with Hereford, in England, it was the fourth of five children. She attended a college of young girls which developed art, and his/her parents paid him private lessons of drawing. It gained a purse for the school of art Slade to London, where it met John Nash and Mark Gertler. It started to have a connection with this last.

It did not employ its first name " Dora" , preferring that it is called " Carrington".

In 1915, in Garsington Manor, at Ottoline Morrell, with which it had a homosexual relation , it met the intellectual Lytton Strachey. It éprit of him. It was homosexual but it kept for him a platonic love. In 1917, Carrington and Gertler separated and when Strachey bought a house with a water mill with Tidmarsh, Carrington settled with him.

It met Ralph Partridge, a friend of its young brother, in 1918. It fell in love with it and he married it in 1921. Carrington refusing to leave Strachey, Partridge and Strachey bought a house called Ham Spray, with Ham (Wiltshire), where they lived all three, having lovers and mistresses each one on their side.

The art of Carrington extended to the signs, furniture and the tiling. It covered frescos the interior of Ham Spray, and carried out wood engraved for Hogarth Close, the publisher of Virginia Woolf. It carried out many portraits of Lytton Strachey, friends and close relations of the Bloomsbury Group, as well as English landscapes. Its activity of painter was little known of alive sound, because it did not sign its works and seldom exposed them.

Reached of a cancer of the stomach, Lytton Strachey died in January 1932. Inconsolable and depressive, Carrington gave itself death using a shotgun two months afterwards.

It is redécouverte since the Années 1970, with the edition of its correspondence, in particular with the writer David Garnett, and the renewed interest which the Bloomsbury Group knows. A film of Christopher Hampton founded on the biography of Michael Holroyd, Carrington (1995), follows its life and that of Lytton Strachey, since their meeting until their death. Its character is interpreted by Emma Thompson.
