Built in 1326, during the construction of the fortifications, it underwent many modifications (base and reinforcements) intended to avoid to him too much wiping the fire of the attacks of new artillery during the head office of Florence.

Making following the demilitarization, which has occurred of the time of the Large-duke Léopold de Médicis, two new passages were on both sides open for a better circulation of the people and vehicles in the middle of the 19th century, when the enclosure of the northern part of the city was demolished to make place with the ring roads.

As the Carried San Frediano, it preserved the two casements of the gate, its fittings and the old locks.

In 1998, a section of wall at summer shot down between Carried Romana and Piazza Tasso, which makes it possible of the big room of the Guards on the first floor of the door to see, by a window, the Jardin of Boboli and part of the Oltrarno.

Above the central arc, was allotted after restoration, a large fresco of Franciabigio, representing the Madone with the Child and four Saints .

On the place opposite, today the center of a grill room, is a large contemporary marble statue of Michelangelo Pistoletto, Dietrofront , representing a woman who moves towards south, while on its head is posed heavy and long burden which indicates the opposed direction, the interior of the city.
