Carriacou
Carriacou is an island of the Grenadian, a Archipel of the Lesser Antilles. Carriacou is most septentrional of the islands of the state of Grenade.
History
The first inhabitants were the Indian Arawak S then the Caribbean which named Carriacou “the country of the reefs”.Carriacou was colonized by French but was yielded in 1763 with Grenade to the the United Kingdom with the treaty of Paris.
Today, the majority of the inhabitants are descendants of African slaves. There is always a British influence on the island which was a long time in the British Empire and is attached has Grenade, member of the the Commonwealth. One finds also a French influence in the names of villages and the creole local.
There are always traditional constructions of boats in the village of Windward, located in the North of the island or one finds the descendants of Scot and Irish.
Many carriacouans emigrated in the United Kingdom, the the United States or in the other islands of the the Antilles because of the lack of employment. The island does not have a manufacturing sector and the Agriculture remains the main activity of the island. Many carriacouans turns over in their island for the holidays or to take their retirement there.
If the Ouragan Ivan in 2004 made considerable damage with Grenade, it saved practically Carriacou and Petite Martinique. However in 2005, the Ouragan Emily struck the island hard obliging with the evacuation of sound only hospital and destroying or damaging hundreds of hearths.
Geography
Carriacou, known like “the island surrounded by reefs”, is the largest island of the Grenadines and with the reputation to be one of most beautiful of the Antilles. It offers long sand beaches white, rather deep bays, relief and sites of damping.The main cities or villages are Hillsborough, Esterre, Grand Bay, Harvey Vale and Windward.
Carriacou does not have a river, the water provision does not come that Précipitation S. the Saison dries extends from February to June.
The island of Petite Martinique is distant from approximately a kilometer and half in the East from Carriacou. It has a surface of 2,4 km ² and a population of 900 inhabitants living primarily of the construction of artisanal ships, fishings and marine safari.
Festivals
There exist three major cultural events with Carriacou :- the Carnaval is held in February or at the beginning of March ;
- “Carriacou Regatta” is held the first weekend of August, it is a race for the built boats in manner artisanale ;
- the “Parang” the weekend before Christmas who celebrates the music and the culture of the island.
Transport
Carriacou has a small airport, Lauriston, (code AITA: VINTAGE), in the West of the island. Connections towards Carriacou are possible starting from Grenade, Trinity-and-Tobago, the Barbados, St Lucia, Saint-Vincent-and them Grenadian and the Martinique.A service of ferry connects Carriacou, Petite Martinique and Grenade usually twice a day.
