Carpates

The Carpates (Rumanian: Carpaţi ) constitutes the part Is of the mountainous unit located at the center of the Europe, which also includes/understands the the Alps, of which they have the same tectonic and geological origins. By taking of account the recent conclusions of Sean Willett, geologist at the University of Washington which analyzed the process of erosion of the alpine chain, according to which the culminating point of the Alps exceeded the 6.500 meters 6 million years ago, one can imagine that the chain of Carpates results from a process of aggradation, or " diluvion" , coming from the alpine high summits of formerly. They extend on the territories from the Austria, of the Slovakia, Poland, of the Czech Republic, the Hungary, the Ukraine, the Romania and the Serbia. They represent the assembly line of the Central Europe.

Carpates owe their name with the tribe Dace of the Carpes whose name could come from an old Indo-European term meaning " pierre". They lived in the beginning on their Eastern slope, in Moldavie and one knows that they were tribes daces which had escaped with the conquest of the Dacie by the Emperor Trajan.

They are named the also Eastern Alps or the Alps of Transylvania. They culminate to 2655 m with the mount Gerlachovský as Slovakia, to 2544 m with the mount Moldoveanu in Romania and to 2499 m with the Mont Rysy in Poland.
