Caroní
The Caroní is a major river of the basin of the Orénoque in the south-east of the Venezuela, on the plates of the Guyana. Caroní is a river with black water, the color of its water being due to the decomposition of vegetable sediments, and not because of the presence of iron near the bed of the river as that is sometimes suggested. Caroní joined the Orénoque and is added to him on approximately 13 km. The two rivers meet with the site of current the Ciudad Guayana. The current city is the result of the fusion of the old colony of San Felix and the town of Puerto Ordaz on each side of the river.
Stoppings were built on the river for the hydroelectric energy production. Today, it counts 5 stoppings. They are respectively, in the direction of the river: the hydroelectric complex " Raúl Leoni " (official name of the Stopping Guri), Caruachi, Macagua I, Macagua II and Macagua III. A new stopping, Tocoma, is currently in construction between Guri and Caruachi.
The municipal council of Ciudad Guayana (in Spanish: Alcaldia Mayor de Caroní, ALMACARONÍ) organized, these 15 last years, a race of swimming on the two rivers Orénoque and Caroní, gathering approximately 900 candidates. The race, the " Paso has Nado Internacional of los Rios Orinoco-Caroní" , is held every year, one Sunday, around the April 19th. This competition was made known with the international scales because of its big number of participants.
