Caroline Otero

Agustina Otero Iglesias , known as Caroline Otero , known as “Beautiful Otero”, is a Chanteuse and Danseuse of cabaret and large courtesan of the Belle Time, born in Spain the November 4th 1868 and died in Nice (the Alpes-Maritimes) the April 10th 1965.

Biography

Born in a miserable family from a small village of Galicia, Ponte of Valga, Caroline Otero is, says one, violated at eleven years, which would have made it sterile, and driven out family home by her mother whereas it is yet only twelve years old. She began in the cabarets from Barcelona then came to Paris where she occurred with the Grand Véfour or with the Cirque of summer.

In 1890, it made a triumphal round with the the United States. Returned to Paris in 1892, it from now on was launched, being made a speciality of the roles of beautiful foreign to the Folies Shepherdess or the Théâtre of Mathurins. She carried behaviors of sumptuous scenes, where the authentic jewels emphasized its centres, which were so famous that it is claimed that the cupolas of the Hôtel Carlton with Cannes had been based on their moulding! She made several rounds in Europe, America and Russia.

In August 1898, Ostero becomes “the first star of the history of the cinema” when the operator Felix Mesguich, with Saint-Pétersbourg, films a dance number by means of a Cinématographe Lumière. The projection which proceeds the following day with the variety Aquarium causes reactions so violent that Mesguich will be expelled of Russia.

It became the friend of Colette and one of the courtesans more for the Belle Time, with Carmencita, Spanish like it, or Liane of Pougy, Cléo de Mérode and Émilienne d' Alençon. With Liana of Pougy, it maintained a noisy competition: “ One remembers the idea that it had, to eclipse a rival, to appear one evening with the theater in a bolero constellated with diamonds. But the woman whom it jalousait was Liane of Pougy. Informed exhibition which prepared, it arrived, the arms, the neck, the shoulders and the hands absolutely naked. When it was in its cabin, which faced that of Caroline Otero, one could see that it was followed of his chambermaid carrying all her jewels ” (Andre de Fouquières).

It allured kings - Edouard VII of the United Kingdom, Léopold II of Belgium - Russian or British aristocrats (the Duc of Westminster, the Nicolas large-duke of Russia), the financial ones, writers, like Gabriele d' Annunzio, of the ministers as Aristide Briand which was a long time his/her lover. It made turn many heads and was at the origin of several duels and six suicides.

During the First World War, it occurred to support moral French soldiers. Then, in 1915, still beautiful and at the top of its glory, it took its retirement and settled with Nice where it was ruined in the casinos and died in 96 years forgotten and poor.

has Paris, it resided at the angle of the Pierre-Ier-of-Serbia avenue and the street Georges-Bizet (16 {{E}} district), then in a private mansion street Fortuny (17 {{E}} district).
Of 1903 with 1911, it had a house with Andrésy (Yvelines) to the 70 Main street (currently street of the Leclerc General).
After 1915, it lives with Nice, 26 rue d'Angleterre.
