Carnival of Monthey

The Carnaval of Monthey belongs to the most known carnivals in French-speaking Switzerland. It takes place each year, as of Thursday before fatty Tuesday, with Monthey in the Canton of Were worth. The “small Carnival” takes place during the weekend, one week before the “Great Carnival”.

The festivals are organized since 1872 and attract many people of the area and nearby cantons. Sunday proceeds the procession downtown during which ravel ten tanks accompanied by Guggenmusik. The procession attracts tens of thousands of spectators (35 000 in 2006).

Friday, the “Prince” of the Carnival is established at the sides of his “Misses” chosen for the occasion. The three comparses appear during the various demonstrations and the procession of Sunday on a tank. Other characters also form part of the tradition in particular the “triboulets”, named according to Triboulet, the insane one of the king of François Ier de France, and equipped very with red with a hat with small bells. The triboulet is the logo of the carnival and a representation of several meters in height of its hat is reproduced on the place of the city.

The “Pimponicaille” indicates Monday when a great festival downtown proceeds. It is also the name of the anthem of the carnival of Monthey.
