Carlton Barrett (born the December 17th 1950 in Jamaica - died the April 17th 1987 in Jamaica)

Carlton " Carly" Barrett was the first to practice the rate/rhythm " One Drop" as a Beater. Essential member of Bob Marley and The Wailers since 1969 with his/her brother Aston " Family man", Carly Co-wrote " Talkin' Blues" and appeared since on all the albums of Wailers. With the happy ones of Carly and the low one of his/her brother Aston, the rhythm section of the Wailers sowed seeds of the current Reggae international.

Still adolescent, it contruisit its first battery with several empty boxes of painting, and was firstly influenced by Lord Knibbs, the large beater of the Skatalites . He and his/her Aston brother were high with Kingston and absorbed the sound " Ska " emerging.

The Barrett brothers started to make known themselves with their group The Hippy Boys . They started to work with Lee " Scratch" Perry, and recorded an international tube, " Return off Django, " under the name The Upsetters .

The brothers united with the Wailers in 1969-70 for several individual: " My Cup (Runneth Over), Duppy Conqueror, Drunk Rebel" , and " Small Axe". These pieces belonged to an double album that Perry left: Drunk Drunk Rebels and Revolution , and formed the early foundations of the sound " One Drop".

Although at the origin of the Wailers , Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston left the group in 1973. Carlton and Aston remained with Bob Marley and recorded " Natty Dread" in 1974. Carlton is credited as type-setter for two pieces of Natty Dread: " Talkin' Blues" and " Them Belly Full" although actually it is Bob Marley which composed these two songs.

Regularly present, Carlton will remain with the Wailers in studio and round until the death of Bob Marley in 1981. Its distinctive style can be heard on each recording of the Wailers produced since 1969.

On Friday, April 17, 1987 Carlton Barrett was brutally assassinated whereas it probably opened the gate of its house by a hired killer paid by his wife.
