Carlos de Seixas

Carlos Seixas (Coïmbre, June 11th 1704 - Lisbon, August 25th 1742) was a Portuguese type-setter wire of Francisco Vaz, Organiste of the cathedral of Coïmbre, and Marcelina Nunes. In 1718, following the death of his/her father, it took his succession. In 1720, it settled with Lisbon where it gave courses of Clavecin. Then it was named organist, position which enabled him to enter to the Royal Vault. He became also professor of music at the noblest families. Although it was in relation to a Neapolitan Master, Seixas did not adopt the Italian style which dominated at the time.

Domenico Scarlatti, come in Portugal in 1721 as a first choirmaster Royal and professor from the infante Maria Bárbara de Bragança, considered Seixas as one of the best teachers than he knew.

At the top of its career, it was named member about Saint Iago, captain of the ordinance of the court and knight about Christ in 1738. The position which it acquired in spite of its plebeian origin proves its talent.

Seixas married in 1732 and had two wire and three girls.

The majority as of its works disappeared in the earthquake which devastated Lisbon in 1755. Only three orchestral parts and some 100 sonatas for keyboard survived, plus a handle of vocal works of liturgical use (much more preserving in comparison of its instrumental music).
