Carlos Marighella

Carlos Marighella is a politician and militant Brésil IEN born in 1911 in the town of Salvador de Bahia. He became member of the Brazilian Communist party (PCB) at the 29 years age, implying himself mainly as an organizer. In spite of many last years in prison, it became as of 1952 an official member of the central committee of the party. In 1953, it left on a journey in Soviet Union then in China, where it met Mao Zedong. Convinced of the need for a military fight for the revolutionary movement, it went to Cuba in 1967, with Havana, to take part in a conference on Latin-American solidarity, in spite of the prohibition of the other members of the party, of which it criticized the opposition to progress. It was, little of time, expelled afterwards of the party. In 1968, it founded the ALN (Action of National Release) in order to link in only one organization the various revolutionary forces of the country, while working in.liaison.with VPR (Vanguarda Popular Revolucionaria) and MR-8 (Movimento Revolucionario 8 of Outubro). The first actions of urban guerilla warfare were thus launched and succeeded, in 1969, with the reference of the American ambassador of the Brésil. Marighella was finally killed in a police ambush in November of the same year.

Principal work

Without any doubt, the major work of Marighella consists in the development of the concept of Urban guerilla warfare, in alternative to the Théorie of the foco of Che Guevara, which preached the departure of the revolution in an rural environment. He wrote his “Manuel of urban guerilla warfare” at the time of the one of his last stays with Sao Paulo, in 1969, little time before his assassination. Containing all the necessary informations with the installation of movement guerilla, this document was thereafter the handbook of drive for several terrorist groups, the such WILL GO (Irish Republican Army) in Ireland or the Red Brigades of Italy.
