According to the biographies established by Simon Collar, professor of history at the university of Essex in England, like Julián and Osvaldo Barsky of Argentina, Berthe Guards, in order to be able to work in the workshop of sharpening, had entrusted the guard of his son to a neighbor; he shared his childhood with the 5 children of this woman, this to his entry at the school. As of the 11 years age, he sang in a choral society of the college Pie IX where he was provided education for. Discusses on its birthplace

The birthplace of Carlos Gardel is the subject always of one live controversy, supplied with the patriotic pride of three nations. Two theses clash, and there still is not consensus Net in favor of one or other, although both camps affirm the definitively distinct question.

According to a first theory, Gardel would have been born in France, with Toulouse, and would have called upon Uruguyan nationality for to avoid problems at the time of its rounds in Europe (its French birth made it mobilizable during the First World war, and thus liable to sanctions for insubordination at the time of its passages in France).

According to the opposed theory, Gardel would have quite simply been born in Uruguay as its identity papers declared it. The legend of its French ascent would find only its origin in its will, falsified to allow the adoptive mother the artist, the Frenchwoman Berthe Guards (1865-1943), to inherit he after its brutal and unforeseen death.

The first theory firmly appears supported. Registers of the French registry office preserve well the trace of a son of Berthe Guards, named Charles Romuald Guards, born in Toulouse 11 December 1890. Argentinian documents also attest the arrival of Berthe Guards and his/her son Charles with Buenos Aires on March 9th, 1893. Lastly, no one disputed the fact forever that Gardel was raised by Berthe Gardès.

This theory highly was however called into question by discovered certificate of birth of a child named Carlos Gardel, born on December 11th, 1887 in Valle Eden in the area of Tacuarembó in Uruguay, almost perfect conformity with documents of identity of the artist. However, this document is denounced like a forgery by the partisans of the first theory.

The oldest administrative document drawn up by Carlos Gardel itself goes back only to 1920. It is about a declaration with the embassy of Uruguay, in which the artist affirms being born with Tacuarembó on December 11th, 1887, and being wire of Carlos and María Gardel, both deceased.

Before the controversy does not develop, Gardel had been questioned several times by journalists about sound birthplace, and its answers are readily evasive; however, that can be explained by its desire to flatter them patriotic feelings of its Argentinian public. It however had this answer quite ready to maintain the legend: " I was born with Buenos Aires at the two years age and demi."

At all events, the voice of Carlos Gardel was declared inheritance of Humanity by the UNESCO, which presents officially the artist like a " Argentinian singer born in France". In Uruguay, many voices claim, in vain so far, that analyzes DNA are carried out for to slice the controversy definitively.
