Carloman (° v. 715 - August 17th 754), oldest son of Charles Martel and Rotrude of Trier, was Maire of the palate of Austrasie of 741 with 747.
He was the brother of Pépin the Brief.
History
He accepted in 741 the Austrasie, the Alémanie and the Thuringe, which he controlled as a sovereign, but without taking the title of king. He had unceasingly to fight the Alamans, the people of Aquitaine, the Bavarois and the Saxons and demolished them everywhere. He was at the origin of an ecclesiastical reform under the impulse of the bishop Boniface, of which he was the guard and with which he granted in 744 a territory on which was founded in 747 the Abbaye of Fulda. Starting from the Germanic Council of 742, it followed an ambitious policy of raising the moral standard of manners of the clerks, respect of the goods of Church and episcopal sees too often with the hands of the laic ones.At the time of a passage to Rome, he asked cléricature to the pope Zacharie. He renonça with the political power leaving his brother Pip the Brief alone reign and founded the monastery of the Soracte Mount in Italy then withdrew himself with the Abbaye of the Mount-Cassin. The historians discussed much on the reasons of this entry in the orders: some saw an operation of Pip there the Brief. Others underline the deep piety of the character. A legend reports that Carloman was withdrawn from the world to make penitence of the Massacre of Cannstatt in Alémanie. Sent in France in 753 for a mission of peace, he died in Vienna in Dauphiné in 754 and was buried with the abbey of the Mount-Cassin.
His/her son Drogon was very quickly isolated capacity by his uncle Pépin the Brief.
