Carlo Zeno

Carlo Zeno or Carlo Zen (1334-1418) was large a Admiral of Venice.

He travelled seven years in the East, then led the negotiation which was worth Ténédos with Venetian in 1376. In 1379, it defended Trévise against the Hungarians and saved this border. It beat then Génois in the lagoons of Venice in 1380 and by this victory the Republic with an imminent ruin tore off.

It was named Lord High Admiral , ambassador in France and England, procurator of Saint-Marc. It demolished the general Boucicaut on sea close to Hodon, and made with same success the war with François de Carrare, but, having been suspected of being itself let corrupt by this prince, it was condemned, though without proof, and was held two years in prison.

After its delivery, it made a pilgrimage with Jerusalem. On its return, it defended the King de Chypre Lusignan against the attacks of Génois.

Returned in Venice, it was devoted to the letters.

His/her brothers, Nicolò Zeno and Antonio Zeno, equipped a ship with their expenses to visit the remote grounds: they moved to the north of Europe and discovered unknown grounds which they named Frisknd , Poland , Engroveland , Estotiland and Icarcé . There is some reason to suspect that they are the Faroe Islands, the Iceland, the Greenland, the Labrador and Newfoundland. They died, the first in 1395, the second in 1405. Their handwritten letters, charts and relations remained unknown until a grandson of Antonio, Antonio Zeno, drew the collection entitled: Discovered islands of Frislanda, Manda, etc , Venice, 1558.
