Carlo Maria Martini

The cardinal Carlo Maria Martini , born the February 15th 1927 with Turin, is a Jésuite Italy N, Archevêque of Milan of 1980 to 2002.

Often regarded as one of the members “progressists” of the Sacré College, it showed through its many writings a width of the sights, which makes it popular in some circles Catholiques.

Biography

Born in Turin in 1927, Carlo Maria Martini entered the Society of Jesus in 1944, and was ordered priest in 1952. In 1958, it obtained its doctorate of fundamental Théologie to the Gregorian pontifical Université, with Rome. As from 1962, it was in charge of teaching to the pontifical biblical Institut, a specialized institute depend on the Gregorian one, of which he became the vice-chancellor in 1969. In 1978, it was chosen by the Pape Paul VI to be the vice-chancellor ( rector magnificus ) of the Gregorian one. During these years, it published many university work.

In December 1979, the pope Jean-Paul II appointed it archbishop of Milan. For its first diocésaine nomination, Carlo Maria Martini thus received a considerable, and extremely prestigious load. February 2nd, 1983, it was created cardinal, receiving the title ( titulus ) of Holy-Cecile of Transtévère. Lastly, of 1987 to 1993, he was the president of the Conference of the European bishops.

In 2002, reached by the retirement age, it was replaced in Milan by Dionigi Tettamanzi. At the time of the Conclave of 2005, 78 years old, it was still eligible, and, in fact, during years, many catholics “progressists” had hoped for his election to succeed Jean-Paul II. But with died of this last, the election of the Martini cardinal was generally regarded as highly improbable, because of its opinions, of its age, or, especially, because he suffers from the Parkinson's disease.

Is one of its most known works in the general public a series of letters exchanged with the Italian author Umberto Eco, whose French translation was published in 1997 pennies the title Croire in what?

In 2007, it reaches 80 years the limiting age and cannot vote any more with the conclave. He declares in July 2007 that he will not celebrate in the extraordinary form of the Roman rite in accordance with the standards established in Summorum Pontificum.
