Carlo Levi

Carlo Levi is a writer, Médecin, painter and Journaliste Italy N, born the November 29th 1902 with Turin, dead the January 4th 1975 with Rome.

Biography

It was born in Turin de Ercole Levi, doctor of Jewish origin and Annetta Treves, the girl of Claudio Treves.

He studies medicine and receives his diploma of the university of Turin in 1924. He however did not practice medicine, choosing to become painter and to continue a political activity started at the university where he had like friend Piero Gobetti.

In 1929, it takes part in the movement antifascist Giustizia E Libertà created by Nello and Carlo Rosselli and it becomes one of the chiefs of the Italian branch with Leone Ginzburg, a Russian Jew of Odessa which had emigrated with his/her parents in Italy.

Adversary of the Fascism, he becomes also member of the Parti Action. Stopped in 1935, it is condemned by the mode to the confinamento (supervised residence) in a sorry area of the the Mezzogiorno, with Grassano, then with Aliano, in the Basilicate, experiment from which it will draw the book Christ is stopped in Eboli and who marked his painting deeply.

Finding its freedom, it leaves for France and saw 1939 there with 1941. In 1941, of return in Italy, it is arrested with Florence and is imprisoned in the prison of Murate. It is released after the arrest of Benito Mussolini and seeks refuge in the Pitti palate, where it wrote with its work Cristo if E fermato has Eboli .

After the second world war, it settles with Rome where it becomes during a certain time writer of Italia released , the publication of the Partito d' Azione , an organization antifascist.

It continues to write and paint, exposing in Europe and to the the United States. Its writings are composed of Orologio (the watch) (1950), the poor word sound system (the words are stones) (1955), and It Futuro ha Cuore Antico (the future one has an ancient heart) (1956).

In 1963, it is elected with the Senate as independent under the label of the Communist party, and is re-elected in 1968.

He dies of a pneumonia in Rome the January 4th 1975, but its last wills are to be buried with Aliano and the house that he occupied there can still be visited.
