Carlo Confalonieri

Carlo Confalonieri is an archbishop Italy N of Aquila (Seveso (Italy), July 25th 1893 - Rome, 1986), he occupied several stations - keys within the Roman Curie, the administrative center of the Catholic church; created cardinal in 1958 by Jean XXIII, it was the Doyen of the College of the cardinals since 1977.

Ordered priest the 18.III.1916, he was secretary and conclavist of the cardinal Achille Ratti, archbishop of Milan at the time of the Conclave of 1922 having followed the death of Benoît XV. The Ratti cardinal having been elected pope under the name of Black and white XI, it was confirmed as private secretary of this Pope (1922-1939). In 1935, it was named canon of the Basilica vaticane.

He was elected archbishop of Aquila (27.III.1941, crowned the 4.V by S.S. Pie XII), before being recalled to Rome. He was named secretary of S. Congrégation for the Seminars and the Universities (25.I.1950) and was promoted titular archbishop of Nicopolis Al Nesto (22.II.1950).

Created cardinal-priest of the title of Holy-Agnes-out-the-walls (15.XII.1958), it was named archpriest of the Holy-Marie-Major Basilica (16.XI.1959). He was also secretary (1961), then Préfet of S. Congrégation Consistoriale (1966).

Cardinal-bishop of Palestrina (15.III.1972), it resigned of his stations the 25.II.1973. Vice-senior of the Crown-College of the Cardinals (7.I.1974), he was papal legate at the time of the opening of the Holy Door of the Archibasilique Midsummer's Day of Lateran (24.XII.1974). Lastly, he was Doyen of the Crown-College of the Cardinals and cardinal-bishop of Ostie, on December 12th, 1977.

Jean Paul II appointed it papal legate at the time of the opening of the Holy Door of the bast Basilica (24.XII.1983).

He died the 1986 in Rome, 93 years old, after nearly 60 years of services at the Holy See and six Popes.
