Carlo Blasis

Carlo Blasis is a Danseur, Chorégraphe and theorist of the dance Italy N born with Naples the November 4th 1797 and died in Cernobbio (Lac of Like) the January 15th 1878.

It begins towards the twelve years age to the Opera from Marseilles, where its family had settled, and continues its studies with Bordeaux in 1816. Having already acquired a certain celebrity, it goes to Paris the following year and begins with the Opéra under control from Pierre Gardel.

Of return in Italy, it becomes First dancer with the Scala of Milan, then with the Fenice of Venice and in Teatro Regio of Turin. Following an accident with the foot, it gives up the scene at the beginning of the Années 1830 and is devoted to choreography and teaching.

Taking again initially works of Jean Dauberval, Jean-Georges Noverre, Pierre Gardel, Jean-Baptiste Blache or Louis Milon, it compose then its own choreographies, for Scala and the best Italian and foreign theaters, in particular with London, Warsaw, Lisbon, Paris and Moscow.

As theorist of the dance, it published several treaties and handbooks which influenced its successors (like Enrico Cecchetti) and who still make authority today:

  • The Code off Terpsichore (London 1828)
  • complete Manuel of the dance (Paris 1830)
  • Studi sulle arti imitatrici (Milan 1844)
  • Notes upon dance hall (London 1847)
  • Delle composizioni coreografiche E delle operates letterarie (Milan 1854).
