Carles Riba

Carles Riba I Bracons (September 23rd 1893 - 1959) is a poet, writer and translator Catalan.

It was born with Barcelona and studied the right and the philosophy with the Université of Barcelona. In 1916 he married with the poet Clementina Arderiu. He worked a time at the school of the booksellers. In 1922 he travelled to Munich to study near Karl Vossler. He supplemented his traditional education while travelling in Italy and Greece in the years 1920. At this time he collaborated with Pompeu Fabra on the General Dictionary of the Catalan Language ( Diccionari General of Llengua Catalana ) Later he worked with the Foundation Bernat Metge ( Fundació Bernat Metge ), specialized in traditional studies, and became Greek reader in at the Indépendante university of Barcelona in 1934. Because of its association with the republican ideas and the Catalanisme, it was forced to flee with Montpellier, in France, after the victory of the pro-Franco forces at the end of the civil war in 1939. In 1943 it turned over to Barcelona to work starting from traditional translations for the Foundation Bernat Metge, of which he became director. He is the author of many poetic works among which Estances (1919 and 1930), Elieges de Bierville (1943), Salvatge Cor (1952), LED joc I LED jib (1947) or Esbós per has very oratoris (1957), as well as translations of Constantin Cavafy, Friedrich Hölderlin, Edgar Allan Poe, Rainer Maria Rilke and Franz Kafka. Its traditional translations include the Odysée Homère, the Lives Parrallèles of Plutarque, and parts of Sophocle and Euripide in Catalan.
