Carla-Bayle
Carla-Bayle is a common French, located in the department of the Ariège and the area the Midday-Pyrenees. Its inhabitants is Carlanais. It is an old citadel huguenote.
Geography
Carla-Bayle is located at 50 km of Toulouse, at 30 km of Foix and at 30 km of Pamiers, in the North-West of the Département of Ariège. The village is located on a rock piton perched at 400 m, overhanging the valleys of the Lèze and the Arize and offering to a sight on the the Pyrenees all close relations. The surroundings consist of hills and slopes timbered in zone of Piedmont.
History
It would seem that the place lodged already a Gallo-Roman Oppidum.
The first hard copies go up however only with 960 after J. - C. and relates to the gift of Carla to the count of Carcassonne with the bishop of Toulouse.
At the 11th century, the village belongs to the Comté of Foix whose count is Roger-Bernard Trencavel. It decides to make there build a castle at the 12th century.
At the 13th century, the village is surrounded by ramparts and the church is built in the center in order to become a country house.
After the Crusade against the Albigensians, the village which names Castlardo becomes property of the king of France.
At the 16th century, the village takes the name of Carla-the-Count which it will keep until the French revolution. It is a Forteresse depend on the count of Foix and whose influence is important in the area. At the 16th century, a Protestant community appears in Carla and the village becomes a center of resistance protesting during the wars of religion.
In 1663, part of the ramparts are destroyed. The catholics and Protestants live then together in relative peace in the village.
Between 1790 and 1794, Carla-the-Count absorbs Martignac , Marens and Niac .
Carla was Chef-lieu canton during the Révolution (of 1790 to the 8 Pluviôse An IX (January 28th 1801)).
At the time of the Revolution, Carla-the-Count takes the name of Carla Bayle then Carla-the-People . It takes again the name of Carla-the-Count after the revolutionary upheaval then, in 1879, it takes again the name of Carla-Bayle, in remembering the writer Pierre Bayle who is a republican symbol.
Recently, the village underwent large work of restoration emphasizing its streets, its municipal or religious buildings and the buildings of the private individuals raising of beautiful colors. The ramparts were also restored partially.

Economy
Some companies are installed on the commune like a factory of abbatage of Volaille S or a specialized company in the Technologies information and the communication. The Tourisme plays also a big role in the economy of the commune. A vacation village is installed close to the Lake Carla-Bayle. Many a Craftsman S and Artiste S is present in the center of the village and animates the streets during the tourist season.
Places and monuments
- a church going back to 1687 is built on the site of the feudal castle of which it keeps the plan and the site. The stones of the ruins of the ramparts were used for its construction. The bell-tower pinion goes back to 1896. It was restored in 1996.
- a temple going back to 1884. It consists of two stages with double gallery. This building was registered with the register of the historic buildings in 1991.
- the museum Pierre Bayle was inaugurated the November 18th 1989 by Lionel Jospin in the native house of the philosopher. He recalls the life and works of Pierre Bayle as well as the history of the Protestantisme with and 18th centuries.
- the Lake Carla-Bayle of 15 hectares.
- the place of Europe with its fountain and the sphere devoted to Pierre Bayle and his inscription: " I am citizen of the monde"
- the Rempart S surrounding the village received the departmental price of the ribbons of the inheritance after their restoration.
