Carl Woese

Carl Woese , of his complete name Carl Richard Woese , born the July 15th 1928 with Syracuse (State of New York) is a microbiologist states-unien, known mainly for its work of molecular phylogeny and the definition in 1977 of the field Archaea (one of the three fields or reigns of alive) ( By the phylogenetic analysis of the sub-unit 16 S of ribosomal ARN, a technique that it developed and which is nowadays that employed to classify all new bacterial or archée species ). He also proposed in 1967 the anteriority of the ARN on DNA, theory taken again in 1986 per Walter Gilbert under the name of RNA world.

Graduate of the Amherst College in 1950, Carl Woese supports a thesis in Biophysique with the Université of Yale in 1953 and becomes teaching with the Université Stanley O. Ikenberry (Illinois), station which it still currently occupies.

He received many rewards for this work:

  • the price John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur in 1984.
  • Elected member of the national Academy of sciences (the United States) in 1988.
  • the Medal Leeuwenhoek of the royal Academy of Dutch cheese (one of the highest distinctions for a microbiologist) in 1992.
  • the Medal Waksman (the United States) in 2000.
  • the Price Crafoord decreed by the Swedish royal Academy of science in 2003.

Carl Woese also teaches microbiology with the Center for Advanced Study of the university of Illinois with Champaign-Urbana and devotes his work to the evolution of the cellular organization. He militates today for the abandonment of the term Procaryote S which he considers incorrect from the phylogenetic point of view, and for the return of a vision darwinienne of the alive world, centered on the emergent properties of the biological systems.
