Carl Schlechter
Carl Schlechter (March 2nd 1874 with Vienna, Austria - December 27th 1918 with Budapest, Hungary) is a Austrian player of failures .
Biography
He begins with the failures at the 16 years age. He gains several tournaments:- Vienna in 1897,1904 and 1910 (with Rudolf Spielmann);
- Ostend in 1906 (where it finishes unconquered, leaf Akiba Rubinstein, Ossip Bernstein, Frank Marshall and David Janowski);
- Stockholm in 1906;
- Hamburg in 1910.
The culminating point of its career is the meeting, world title concerned, against Emanuel Lasker in January - February 1910, with Vienna. It must accept the requirements of the world champion, in particular the need for the challenger for overcoming with two points to seize the title in advance. The two players are with equality after the 10th part (+1-1=8). Lasker proposes to him to continue, but Schlechter, tired, gives up.
It had the reputation to play to cancel. He was however a large theorist, writing a important Monographie on the Gambit of the accepted king.
He dies into 1918 of a Pneumonie.
