Carl Frederick Kauffeld

Carl Frederick Kauffeld is a American herpetologist , born the April 17th 1911 with Philadelphia and dead the July 10th 1974 with Staten Island.

It is the reading of the book on the Reptile S of Raymond Lee Ditmars (1876-1942), Reptile Book, whereas it was only nine years old, which encourages it to be interested in these animals. During its secondary studies, it is voluntary with the Academy off Natural Sciences off Philadelphia in the department of Entomologie but also with the zoo of the city in Herpétologie. After its studies, it off belongs to the department of herpetology of the American Museum Natural History directed by Gladwyn Kingsley Noble (1894-1940) of 1930 to 1936.

He prefers, with a career in a Muséum, the contact with live animals and he accepts, in 1936, a station of conservative of the reptiles to the zoo of Staten Island. He then develops one of the principal collections of alive reptiles of the the United States, he enorgueillit to expose all the species of rattlesnakes of the country. Its experiment is made profitable during the Second world war where it is useful as specialist in the reptiles in the sanitary service in the armies.

Kauffeld makes appear more than 200 publications, the majority being popular works both for the general public the amateurs. It in particular makes appear, with Howard Curran (1894-1972), Snakes and Their Ways (1937) then, only, Snakes and Snake Hunting (1957) and Snakes: The Keeper and the Kept (1969). Guards of nature reproach him for giving precise localities where can be found rare species which are the subject soon of an overexploitation by the collectors.

Kauffeld trains many young people who will become the conservatives of the reptiles in the zoos of the country. It stimulates also the interest scientists for the reptiles of many amateurs of New York. Some of them, like Richard Highton (1927-), Carl Gans (1923-) or William George Degenhardt (1926-). He refuses to take the direction of the zoo of Milwaukee (1948) and prefers to remain with the zoo of Staten Island which he directs from 1963 to 1973, year of its departure to the retirement.
