Carl-Gustaf Rossby

Carl-Gustaf Arvid Rossby (born with Stockholm the December 28th 1898, deceased in Stockholm the August 19th 1957) is a Météorologue of Swedish origin , later naturalized American, which was the first to have explained the movements on broad scale of the atmosphere thanks to the Mécanique of the fluids.

It developed its interest for meteorology while studying with the professor Vilhelm Bjerknes of the Université of Stockholm. In 1919, it took part in the " school of Bergen " , in Norway with this last. Between 1920 and 1922, it studied especially the Hydrodynamique, the general circulation of the oceans and, thereafter, the atmosphere. In 1922, it joint weather service and hydrological of Sweden where he made party of several forwardings oceanographical S as meteorologist. He studied the Mathematical physics between forwardings what gave him the bases of its subsequent work.

In 1926, Rossby emigrated in the United States to join the National Weather Service (NWS) to Washington (District of Columbia) where he worked on turbulence by combining his theoretical research with the data of incipient aviation. In 1928, it off founded the first department of meteorology in an American university with the Massachusetts Institute Technology ( MIT ). Its work concerns there atmospheric thermodynamics, the mixture by turbulence of the air and the interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere.

In 1938, he becomes American citizen and in 1939, the assitant-director of research of the NWS. In 1940, he becomes the director of the department of meteorology of the Université of Chicago where he starts to make research on circulation with large scales of the atmosphere. Rossby will identifira the Courant-jet and its characteristics, as well as the long waves of the circulation called in its honor waves of Rossby .

During the Second world war, Rossby will organize the training of the military meteorologists. Several of them will work under its orders at the university of Chicago after the war whereas it develops its descriptions of the atmospheric dynamics in mathematical model for weather forecasting. In 1947, he was the first director of the Swedish institute of meteorology of Stockholm in addition to its work in Chicago. Of 1954 to its death, it was one of the pioneers of the atmospheric Chimie.
