Carignan

The carignan is a red Cépage primarily cultivated in Languedoc-Roussillon, it enters nevertheless sometimes, in certain areas, the production of rosy Wine. It shares with the Gamay a reputation, unjustified today, of poor type of vine only planted for its output. Admittedly, following the crisis of the Phylloxéra, one planted in the irrigated plains of Languedoc-Roussillon of the thousands of hectares of carignan, which largely harmed the reputation of the Vin S of this area and that of type of vine: indeed, with outputs higher than 60 hectolitres with the hectare, one obtains wines without interest, rough and incompetents to age. But today the tendency is with pulling up, and the good wine growers preserve only the old vines planted in slopes, with outputs not exceeding 50 hectolitres with the hectare, which make it possible to obtain very interesting results.

The majority of the appellation contr4ol3ees of the Languedoc and Roussillon, the carignan enters only for 30% the composition of the wines, sometimes less (some even straightforwardly removed it). A notable exception: the fitou, which remained faithful to the carignan and was right well, continuing to produce a wine faithful to its soil, rich in Tanin S, powerful, framed and which improves into growing old. Young people, the wines are dominated by the red spice and fruit flavors. Into growing old, they develop other notes: ripe fruits (prune in particular), toast, grilled almond, leather.

Of Spanish origin, the carignan owes its name at the town of Cariñena, in the province of Saragossa, whose old name was Caranyena. It is cultivated a little besides in Spain, like in Italy, Greece, California, with the Mexico, in Argentine and Australia. During many decades, the carignan was the type of vine more planted in France. It is not any more the case today: with 95.744 hectares cultivated in 2000, it is preceded by the Merlot (101 302 hectares) and is pursued by the black Grenache (95 717 hectares).
