Caribou (Nova Scotia)

Caribou is a port of the county of Pictou in Nova Scotia. Located on the Strait of Northumberland, Caribou is named according to the Caribou of the Wood, which lived in the area until Europeans made them disappear because of intensive hunting for the XIXe century. Places surrounding name also Caribou, like the Baie of Caribou , on which the village is thus that the Île Caribou, located in north.

Caribou became an important port when the selected federal government the place in the Thirties to be the terminus in Nova Scotia of a seasonal cross bar towards the east of the Island-of-Prince-Edouard. The service, operated by Northumberland Ferries Limited since its introduction in 1941, transports cars, passengers and trucks towards Woods Islands, between December and May.

There is also a small cross bar connecting Caribou to the Île of Pictou, in departure of the fishing port located close to the terminal of cross bar.
