Carennac

Carennac is a common French, located in the department of the Lot and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.

Its inhabitants is called Carennacois.

Geography

Carennac one of the more beautiful villages of France is located at 66 km in the North-East of Gourdon.

Small commune served by the station of Bétaille, on the line of Aurillac to Brive, Carennac is in the center of an area rich in natural curiosities and historic sites of a great interest: with a few kilometers, the pit of Padirac and a high-place of Pilgrimage: Rocamadour. History

Time when it named Carendenacus , Carennac was a medieval village gathered around a church dedicated to holy Sernin and depend on the abbey of Cluny. Places and monuments

The village of Carennac developed as from the 11th century, after the foundation of a priory about Cluny. Blotti along the fortifications of the monastery, Carennac preserves many aspects of the Moyen-âge. Its church Saint-Pierre is a very beautiful Romance building equipped with splendid a tympanum of the 12th century. Its Cloister , rebuilt at the 15th century after the War One hundred Year old, shelters in its chapter house famous the Mise at the tomb , sculpture of the end of the 15th century of a rare perfection.

At the 16th century, the construction of the castle of the Senior is carried out with his white stone frontage of the country, the windows with Meneau X, the carved attic windows. Personalities related to the commune

Most famous: François de Pons de Salignac of Mothe-Fénelon , known as Fénelon , born the August 6th 1651. The island of Télémaque, between two arms of the the Dordogne opposite Carennac, owes him its name since it is in the church of Carennac that he would have written his work of the same title.
