Carboniferous metropolitan region

The metropolitan region Carbonifère ( Região Metropolitana Carbonífera in Portuguese) was created in 2002 by the law n°221 of the State of Santa Catarina. It gathers seven municípios forming a Conurbation around Criciúma. Three other municipalities form the “surface of expansion” of the Metropolitan region. On the whole, 10 municipalities are dependant in this territorial entity.

According to the law, the municipalities of Lauro Müller, Treviso and Urussanga, form the surface of expansion of the area, while the others are full members of the Metropolitan region. Gathering more: 300000 inhabitants, it constitutes an important economic pole of the State, in particular in the field Industrie L.

Because of intense exploitation of the coal throughout the 20th century, the area is touched by pollution, as well grounds and water as air.

The metropolitan region extends on 1333 km ² (2 001 km ² by counting the surface of expansion) for a total population of more than: 323000 inhabitants in 2006 (close to: 358000 inhabitants by counting the surface of expansion).
