Return to the article Districts of Nice ----

The district Carabacel is located directly at the north of the Old woman-City beyond the Paillon, the river torrent which passes in the city (currently covered by gardens or public edifices for its central part).

History

The etymological origin is local ( because as a Celt = hill, mount, rock). One could suppose that the Colline could be used as career (the Colline of the Castle being reserved for defense). In the the Middle Ages, the term of suburb Saint-Jean-Baptist is illustrated on the notarial plans and writings.

This district developed very early as of the construction of the Saint-Anthony bridge, then called Pont old when the new bridge located on the current Masséna place either built in 1824. The Saint-Anthony bridge gave access towards France whose border stopped with banks of the VAr.

Constructions replaced the kitchen gardens of the Middle Ages, the regulating plan of the Consiglio d' Ornato , put an end in the years 1850 to the anarchistic urbanization of the suburb. However, the regulating plan stopped - alas! - with the current Dubouchage boulevard what gave a certain urban cacophony beyond the boulevard in the years 1860…
