Capoue is a common of approximately: 19000 inhabitants, located in the Province of Caserte in Campania, in the southernmost Italy.

Geography

Capoue is in the territory of the Terra di Lavoro of which it was a time the capital (Principauté of Capoue) and the chief town (Napoleonean time). The agglomeration is on an arm of the river Volturno, position stategic during the History, with the foot of the Tifata mount where is located the frazione Sant' Angelo in Formis.

The commune is crossed by the antique Via Appia (current trunk road S 7 ), like by the railway line Naples - Caserte - Cassino. Capoue is the terminus of the Via Casilina (trunk road S 6 , ancient Via Latina ). The highway A1 Rome - Tablecloths (ex A2), which passes not far from the city, is accessible by toll from Capoue. The commune is also served by a small tourist airport and soldier dedicated to Cesare Falco, which was the subject recently of a proposal for an enlarging to convert it with civil transport with the service of the airport of Naples.

The communal chief town is subdivided in three principal districts: the historical center girds ramparts, in continuation of the antique Casilinum ; to the west of the center, on the other side of the river and along via Appia extends the district from Fuori Porta Roma ; contrary to the trunk road, to the south beyond the ramparts, the other district of Fuori Carried Napoli , in which the station is established. Other small hamlets, called rioni , are dispersed in the surrounding countryside.

Structure

The historical center of Capoue which is on an arm of the Volturno to the site of the ancient city of Casilinum, is rich in monuments and historical buildings and has many archaeological parts of the Roman epoch, like steles or statuettes, that one finds at the edge of the roads or on the walls of the oldest buildings.

Basilica Benedettina which is in the frazione Sant' Angelo in Formis of style byzantino-campanien (fine of and remade at the 19th century (the convent acted as barracks)

  • Église of San Raffaele (18th century) and ex convent (17th century)
  • Église of San Benedetto with a ex convent, based by the Benedictines in 1108 and restored by the Jesuits in 1611
  • Église and convent of Santa Maria delle Monache , of Baroque architecture of 1726 on a building of 952. Part of the convent became the Fieramosca barracks in 1812
  • Églises Sant' Eligio and San Gaetano and ex convent Teatino (1284 - 1296), with a bell-tower of the Rebirth (1514 - 1524) and a frontage baroque (1747). Today, the convent shelters a barracks of police officers.
  • Church of Maddalena and ex convent Agostiniano , church built about 1300 by Bartolomeo de Capua, with a hospital like appendix (become convent thereafter), the unit restored in 1747. One finds there the vaults nobilaires Jus patronatus of the noble families of Capoue, Lanza (vault dedicated to Joseph saint, restored in 1753), Gianfrotta, Boccardo.
  • Church and ex monastery of Concezione of the 18th century but with origins much older. In 1940, the monastery belongs to the Museo Campano
  • Église of San Domenico of the end of the 13th century and restored completely at the time baroque
  • Église Santi Rufo E Carponio (first half of the 11th century). With the poque Norman, the Benedictines build the bell-tower and the two apses.
  • Church of San Marcello, former to the 10th century and restored at the 19th century
  • Church of Charity (1697), an example among the most succeeded of the baroque capouan. The church is, today still, the proprity of Famous Archiconfraternité Royale of Bianchi della S.S.Carità, aristocratic association which had, at all times, among its objectives to ensure the spiritual safety of condemned to the capital punishment and to provide the dowry for the marriages of promised in marriage orphan.
  • Église San Salvatore Piccolo which dates from the 11th century
  • Ex church San Martino went Giudea , Gothic style of the end of the 14th century, built in the old Jewish district (until 1540)
