Cape Verde

The republic of the Cape Verde is an insular country of the Atlantic Ocean with broad of the Africa. Portuguese colony starting from 1456 (arrived of the first colonists on the archipelago then uninhabited), the country reached independence in 1975. It draws its name from the Cap Verde.

History

The islands of Cape Verde remained uninhabited until the arrival of the Portuguese explorers in 1456 and with the foundation of Ribeira Grande (Cidade Velha) in 1462 on the island of Santiago. Portuguese colony until in 1975, the history of Cape Verde is marked by two booms, at the XVIIe century thanks to the trade of the slaves, then at the end of the XIXe century which saw the opening of the transatlantic lines. The country opened with the multi-party system in 1990.

The archipelago of Cape Verde is in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coasts of the Senegal of the Gambia and the Mauritania. The archipelago is divided into two series of islands: in the south the islands of '' Sotavento '' (Faced, Fogo, Santiago and Maio) and in north the islands of '' Barlavento '' (Boa Vista, Sal, São Nicolau, Santa Luzia, São Vicente and Santo Antão). Sal is attended. Cape Verde profits from three international airports: the airport Amilcar Cabral on the island of Sal, since November 1st, 2005 the airport Francisco Mendes on the island of Santiago and since October 31st, 2007 the international airport on the island of Boavista. Praia, the administrative capital is on the island of the Santiago, vastest of the archipelago.

The islands is very of volcanic origin , it is on the island of Fogo (island of the large volcano) that the culminating point 2  is; 829 m: the Pico C Fogo whose last lava flow goes back only to 1995. The majority of the islands have a escarpé relief and are covered with volcanic ash low in vegetation. The climate is hot and dry there, with an average temperature located between 20 at 25°C. During the months of January and February the archipelago is subject to the influence of the sandstorms come from the the Sahara.

Culture of Cape Verde east of African and European origin. There exist various kinds of music like the Funaná , the Coladeira , the Morna (made famous in the whole world thanks to Cesária Évora), the mazurca or the Batuque . The music Zouk is popular in the young people. Suzanna Lubrano is a singer of zouk which gained the Kora Award as a better artist of Western Africa and better African artist in 2003.

Language

The official language of Cape Verde is Portuguese but the inhabitants speak the creole mainly capverdien ( crioulo in Portuguese, kriolu or kriol in Creole capverdien). The English and the French are taught at the school.

There exist regional variations of the Creole, suitable for each of the 9 inhabited islands but which are not sufficiently important to prevent comprehension between the inhabitants. The various Creoles of Cape Verde can be separate in two groups: Creoles of Sotavento (Faced, Fogo, Santiago and Maio) and Creoles of Barlavento (Boa Vista, Sal, São Nicolau, São Vicente and Santo Antão).

Cape Verde remained uninhabited until the arrival of the colonists Portuguese in 1456 and its population is resulting from an interbreeding between the latter and the imported slaves of the western continent African.
