Lou course Herré
The peninsula of the course Ferret is only 3000 years old of geological history: it is the most recent formation of the Gascon coast. As in the remainder of the Moors of Gascogne, under ground is composed of a layer of likings resulting from the cementing of the grains from quartz between them due to the decomposition from clay in the presence of iron and from organic matter: the layer of Alios water streaming in the tablecloth is thus very charged out of iron and when it leads to the beach, causes trails oxidized with the colors of rust. It is this phenomenon which justifies the name of “course Herré”, the iron point in Gascon, which will become later the course Ferret.
First inhabitants
At the 19th century, certain fishermen had settled in various places of the peninsula, while the point was occupied only in a temporary way. The fishermen of Tests It and from Gujan came in Pinasse from the basin from Arcachon to track fish at the entry of the Bassin of Arcachon. It set up some huts of fortune on the beaches where they could accost easily by a channel. Protected by the point from the course Tag, they were with the shelter of the winds of West and near the fish benches. In 1857, a dozen huts were already present on the beaches near the headlight, famous “the district of the fishermen”. Throughout this second half of the 19th century, some civils servant, customs officers, guards of headlight and employees forest join this population of fishermen come from opposite.Under the impulse of Napoleon III, the Ostréiculture spreads as from 1860, and of the oyster pieces are sold and installed on the muddy estrans of the basin. It is at this period hinge that ostreiculture, just like sylviculture through the Gemmage and a little later tourism, will be essential in the local economic landscape.
