Cape-of-North
The Cape-of-North ( Noord-Kaap in Afrikaans, Northern Wraps English ) is a province of the South Africa, formed in 1994 of the septentrional part of the the dissolved Cape Province. Its chief town is Kimberley.
The province is surrounded in north of the Namibia, in the North-East of the Botswana and the South-African province of the North-western, in the east of the province of the State-Free in the east, the south of the province of the Cape-Westerner, and in the west of the Atlantic Ocean.
Cape-of-North is by far the most extended province of South Africa, but its territory is dominated by the arid plate of the Large-Karroo (which includes/understands the Kalahari Desert ) and of the Désert of Namib. It is thus the least populated province nation too.
Before the appearance on stage of the Dutch Company of the Eastern Indies, the major part of the province is populated by people of language Khoïsan. Several small communities (for example the Namas and the Bochimans) of the province continue to speak about the languages khoïsan.
Other descendants of the people khoïsan mixed with the colonists with the Netherlands, the servants of the Indonesia, and the slaves of other countries of Africa. The people of this kind, known as coloured persons or mongrels, who speak Afrikaans for a long time, constitute the majority of the province. A group historically distinct from those are the Griqua, which settled in the current area of Western Griqualand at the 19th century.
Western Griqualand has an particular importance for the province, because its principal city, Kimberley, are the center of the zone mining essential with the provincial economy.
The Diamant S of Kimberley provided to Cecil Rhodos the major part of its richnesses.
The important minority Tswana is especially present in urban environment, and on the Eastern fringe of the province.
Since the end of the Apartheid, the provincial government is formed of ANC.
At the time of the municipal elections of 2006, the ANC carries out the large slam with 69,96% of the votes compared with 14,03% with the democratic Alliance.
Only the town hall (dissenting) of Orania remains with the hands of an opposition party, that of the Front of freedom.
