Cape-Eastern

The Cape-Eastern ( Mpuma Koloni in Xhosa, Oos-Kaap in Afrikaans, Eastern Wraps in English) is a province of the Republic of South Africa.

Its chief town is Bisho, the old capital of the Bantoustan of Ciskei in the neighborhoods of King William' S Town ( iQonce ).

The other important urban poles are East London ( iMonti ) and Port Elizabeth ( iBhayi ). Grahamstown is the seat of the one of the oldest universities in South Africa.

A Enclave of the province of Cape-Eastern is entirely surrounded by the province close to KwaZulu-Native. Its principal city is Umzimkulu.

TheEastern one historically formed part of the Colonie of the Cape whose capital was the Cape. The government Apartheid had created two Bantustans, the Ciskei and the Transkei, for the people xhosa which are majority in theEastern one. After 1994, one dismantled the Bantustans while cutting the Province of Cape into four. This installation reflects the demographic distinction between the province of the Cape-Westerner, mainly Afrikaans and of “color”, and theEastern one.

A former provincial Prime Minister, Makhenkesi Stofile, had committed himself making change the name of the province because of his connotation colonialist (foot-note the word koloni in the version xhosa) and owing to the fact that the province does not include obviously any more the Cape of Good Hope. But one tackled the costs planned for such a change, and following the fall of the capacity of Stofile thanks to a scandal, the project of name change seems to have been abandoned.

The two last Presidents of South Africa, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, were born in the province from theEastern one.

Politically the province is largely dominated by the ANC. It counts 40 great municipalities. At the time of the municipal elections of 2006, only the municipality of Baviaans (Willowmore) was carried by the opposition of the democratic Alliance (DA) whereas the ANC carried 81,74% of the votes at the provincial level against 7,64% with the DA and 5,3% with the plain Democratic movement.
