Capac Yupanqui

Capac Yupanqui (Quechua: Qhapaq Yupanki ) was the fifth INCA (~1320/~1350) of the kingdom of Cuzco. Its predecessor was his uncle Mayta Capac. He was the last sovereign of the dynasty of Hurin Cuzco. One does not have a proof of the existence of the first seven kings incas, the history of Capac Yupanqui is thus semi-legendary.

He was the son of Curuyaya, the sister of Mayta Capac. It is normally his/her cousin Tarco Huaman who was the heir-at-law to the throne, but Capac Yupanqui warps a plot against him to seize the power.

To be maintained there, it had to resort to a series of assassinations. It made kill nine brothers of Tarco Huaman, obliged others of them to swear fidelity to him and made exile a third group. With its come to power, the kingdom had already acquired an appreciable power, but Capac Yupanqui decided to take again forwarding in the Kunti Suyu which had been stopped by the death of his/her uncle. Two victorious battles made it possible to occupy part of the Kunti country. It accepted an embassy sent by the lord of the ethnos group quechua (Abancay) which required the assistance of the incas against powerful the Chancas of Andahuaylas. Those threatened to invade them and destroy their kingdom.

This mark of respect contributed to increase the prestige of the incas near the other people of the area. At the time of Capac Yupanqui, two other kingdoms were expanding: to north Chancas and the south the Stuck S. the kingdom of Cuzco, in spite of the rout of Kuntis, remained of modest size.

Capac Yupanqui conquered the populations of Cuyoyanca thereafter (to 22 km of Cuzco). To control this territory, it named his cousin Tarco Huaman like tucricu (governor), with for responsibility of giving each year thousand cages of birds of the selva and the Puna. These birds were used in the ceremonies and the ritual ones, and their multicoloured feathers were used for the clothes industry of the clothes of the monarch. Because of the prestige acquired by the incas, the Aymara S, their former enemies, required an alliance and with this intention offered to him like marries in Curi Hilpay, the girl of the Curaca, which joined the Harem of Capac Yupanqui. According to the tradition, another of the wives of Capac Yupanqui, Cusi Chimbo, moved by the jealousy made poison the monarch. The disappearance of this last caused a crisis successoriale. Cusi Chimbo was the instrument of a plot directed by his/her son, the future INCA Roca. Anarchy was exploited by Chancas, which invaded the kingdom. With the death of Capac Yupanqui was completed the prevalence of Hurin Cuzco. Of alive sound, Capac Yupanqui had designated as successor his son Quispe Yupanqui. But Quispe Yupanqui died in the chaos caused by the death of his/her father and its name was removed official story by Hanan Cuzco.
