Canton of Zurich

The canton of Zurich (in German ) is a Swiss Canton, whose chief town is Zurich.

History

The history of the canton is parallel to that of the town of Zurich.

Geography

Canton of Switzerland close to the border with Germany. Its close cantons are: Argovie, Zoug, Schwytz, Schaffouse, Thurgovie and Saint-Gall. He is sprinkled by the Limmat, the Sihl, the the Thur and the Töss like by a small portion of the the Rhine. It is the canton more populated country with 1.180.000 inhabitants divided out of 1729 km2. The population is in German-speaking and Protestant majority. Its chief town is the town of Zurich and the main cities are Bülach, Winterthour, Dietikon and Uster. One can distinguish several areas. The area of the Lake Zurich is primarily used like zone of residence and leisures, enjoying moreover a tourist strong potential. In the east, Oberland is specialized in sylviculture and the textile. In the west and north, Unterland prolongs the great industrial park of Zurich and its agglomeration. The canton is thus mainly dedicated to industry, thus concentrating about half of the head offices of the first hundred Swiss companies. The agricultural activities nevertheless are preserved in the north of the canton (vines) and in the Préalpes (fruits, cereals, vines, breeding).

Languages

German is the official language of the canton. One counts however 4% of italophones and a few thousands of speakers of the romanche. To note that it is not German of Germany (Hochdeutsch) which is spoken but the Germanic inhabitant of Zurich, which differs somewhat from the other Swiss Germanic speeches.
